I have been itching for a fun furniture makeover.  Unfortunately, my work schedule has kept me pinned to the sewing machine for the past several week and I am forced to live vicariously through some of these amazing projects.

I love this idea from Art is Beauty.  This is not only a beautiful piece it is completely functional.

And, I love a great coffee table makeover (since I’ve yet to decide on what to do with mine).  This one from Fab Rehab Creations is great.

Fun & funky dresser makeover from I’m Not a Trophy Wife.  Love the bright colors!

This desk is in one of my favorite shades of turquoise.  Just the right mix of green and blue.   And, I LOVE the cow print too!   You can see both the before and after on Refresh Restyle.

Another great potting bench creation.  This one is from Jack of all Trades.

I have a thing for mid-century modern furniture and this dresser makeover from Plumdoodles is awesome.  As always I’m amazed at the power of paint.

Done.  Finished.  Finito.   Finally.  After what seems like forever I finally finished up my dining room table and chairs last night.  I started several weeks ago with  one of the dining room chairs (you can read about it here) and then worked my way through the chairs one at a time.   The last chair was finally finished this past Friday and I got ready to jump right into the table makeover or at least that was the plan.  Unfortunately, we had some serious thunderstorms blow through that brought so much wind and rain it was impossible to really get the ball rolling until Sunday.  As soon as the weather cleared the fun began.

BEFORE:

It is an old table that I purchased at an auction 10+ years ago and I loved that it was square, but could easily be converted to a larger rectangle shaped table,  if needed.  At some point and time I applied some stain to the table, but never bothered to finish it any further than that.  Can you say lazy?

The chairs were all completed when I took these pictures, so they really make the table seem more sad and neglected.  The table actually turned out to be a much easier project to tackle then the chairs, but paint versus stain is always easier IMHO.  The plan was simple,  sand down the table top and stain to match the chairs, while painting the bottom half something bright.

AFTER:

And, amazingly, everything went really smoothly.  The table top received two coats of Polyshades in Antique Walnut, just like the chairs, but it also received another coat of Polyurethane for extra protection.  I may still do one more coat just to be sure it’s sealed up properly.

This flash photo was the only way I was able to get close to a true representation of the paint color.  Remember when I said I was going to paint it something bright?  Oh, yeah it’s bright.  I love it.  I usually chicken out when it comes to going a little crazy with color, but this time I just went with it and didn’t give myself an opportunity to back out.  The legs were sprayed in a color called Lagoon by Rustoleum in a satin finish.  You can see a more true representation of the color here.

Now that this project is finally complete I can’t believe I lived with it in that sad state for so long.  Now if only I could update the 80′s railing that surrounds the dining area.  Ah, the joys of renting.

Cost Breakdown:

Polyshades: $13 (quart/about half a can left)

Polyurethane: $0 (on hand/approx $12 if you had to purchase)

Spray Paint:  $4 (partial can/plus 1 new can)

Sanding Supplies: $0 (steel wool & sandpaper on hand)

Total:  $17

This is one of those projects that involves more time than anything, which I guess I can use as my excuse as to why it sat like it did for so long??

Been a busy bee cleaning and staining the rest of the dining room chairs, you can see where I started here, so no new projects yet again this week.  I’m hoping (fingers crossed) that all the chairs will get knocked out this week and I’ll be able to take on the dining room table by this weekend.  It is going to need the most lovin’, but we won’t be able to live without it  for too long since it just so happens to be where we eat most meals.  Which means when I start it there will be no time for dilly dallying.

At the moment I’m having a hard time focusing on the dining room, because  this past weekend I was F.I.N.A.L.L.Y. able to order the fabric to sew the slipcovers for the sofa cushions (more info on the sofa slipcovers here).  This stinking fabric has been on back order for over a month, which resulted in the living room makeover coming to a complete halt.   Long story short.  Searched everywhere (online & locally), collected samples, overjoyed at the discovery of a near perfect match, went to order it and discovered it was on back order, disappointed, began waiting game.  Bummer.  I should note it was my own unwillingness to pay almost double for the same fabric from other retailers that caused the extended delay.  See I found it in 3 separate locations actually, two different online vendors and one here locally.  The two online vendors offered it at the same base price, but Fabric.com (one of my favorite fabric sites) offers free shipping on orders over $35 and almost always has discount coupons too.  The other vendor had no coupons (that I could find) and wanted to charge like $65+ for shipping.  CRAZY.  The local shop which was supposed to sell fabrics at wholesale prices wanted $5 more a yard than the online vendors and since I was buying 17 yards of fabric that was no small chunk of change.  So I waited and waited (only stalking the site occasionally to see if the back order date had changed) until this past Saturday when I was  finally able to order the fabric using a 25% off coupon and free shipping.  Over $100 in savings!  So now I will wait not-so-patiently for it to arrive and try to distract myself with coffee table makeovers….

Realistic Chic really transformed her table with a can of spray paint.  Aah, the magic of spray paint.

And, I love this two-tone makeover from Rachel Bishop Designs.  Beautiful table.

Lucy Designs took this table from blah to beautiful.  She shares a little tutorial on how she did as well.

Okay, this one is more of a side table, but it is still a great transformation.  Check out Sweet Pickens to see the before photo.

Pepper Design shares a tutorial on how she transformed her coffee table into an ottoman.  Love it.

The kids and I are back in ATX this week during our Spring Break, so no projects of my own to share.  Of course, that doesn’t stop me from sharing other great projects out there.  The power of paint never ceases to amaze me.

Love this yellow for these little laminate end tables…You can see the whole transformation over on Liz Marie Blog.

And, this bright yellow breathes new life into this old dresser.  I love the legs and those little knobs!  Check out the before on Design Sponge.

I love the texture of the paint on this dresser makeover from generation to generation.

Can’t help but be drawn to the zig-zag design on this slightly distressed dresser by Retropolitan.

And, Lovely Crafty Home, completely transformed this sweet deal of a desk from Goodwill with some brilliant blue.

Loving this Kelly Green!  Not sure I’ll ever be brave enough to paint something so bold (kid furniture excluded),  but this table becomes a show stopper with some gloss spray paint.  Check out the before on Pig and Paint.

As much sewing as I’ve done in my life, I’m still a big ol’ chicken when it comes to re-upholstering anything.  It makeovers like this one that give me the urge to find a piece to experiment on.  You can see the before chair on Two Thirty-Five Designs.

Belle Maison takes this boring little side table and creates a beautiful accent piece.

Milk paint never fails to impress with it’s unique personality.  You never know how a finished piece will turn out.  Like this amazing armoire from Perfectly Imperfect.

Beautiful blue ombre dresser makeover from Red Hen Home.  You really need to see the before to truly appreciate the final piece.

Our dining room table and chairs are a mish mash of an antique table found at an auction and some antique chairs passed down to me from my mom.  Neither the table or chairs have received any love in a looong time, so this makeover is very overdue.  I’m starting with the chairs because I can pull them out of rotation one at a time without really interfering in day to day life.

Current condition…

Still completely sound, but looking a little war torn.  They’ve survived 80+ years in the family with only a little cleaning here and there.  Of course, my mom used to threaten our lives when we were little if anything ever happened to them, so let’s just say we treated them with care.

My plan was to clean them up and then refinish with some new stain and poly.  I love all the little battle scars these guys have received over the years and didn’t have any intention of  re-creating the chairs into anything “new”.  The first attempt at cleaning, involved a mild solution of olive oil and vinegar, but after some hard scrubbing it really only scratched the surface of the layers of dirt and grime accumulated over the years.  Stage two involved smelly mineral spirits and chemical gloves.  The mineral spirits are much harsher on both the wood and myself, but definitely required to clean these babies.

After the scrubbing and drying were complete,  it was time for stain.  For this project I went with Polyshades in Antique Walnut from Minwax.  Polyshades are stain and polyurethane in one.  Super easy to apply, but requires about 6 hours in-between coats.  Looong dry time.  What worked for me was to apply a coat later in the evening,  let it dry overnight and through the entire next day.  Then apply a second coat the next evening.  Rushing stain and/or poly is never a good idea.  I’ve learned that lesson the hard way.

Chair #1 after two coats:

Much better, huh.  I love the new finish as it has really breathed some new life into these old guys.  Well, guy anyway.  One chair down and three more to go.  Then it’s onto the table.  Fun, fun!
