Burlap Jack O Lantern – Super easy to create.

Okay.  While cleaning my sewing room today, I came across this remnant piece of orange burlap.  I originally purchased it for my burlap candle sleeve project and as with all my projects I purchased some extra.  I’ve learned the hard way that it never pays to purchase just enough of anything.  Doing that only guarantees another trip to the craft or hardware store to replace whatever part of the project I destroyed during assembly.  Anyways, back to the scrap piece of orange burlap.  I picked it up off the floor pulled it out from my pile of extra fabrics to see just how large it was and immediately thought it would make a cute pumpkin.  So here’s what I did…

1.  My remnant was about 48″ x 28″.  A square would be easier to work with, but I didn’t want to go any smaller, so I worked with what I had.

2.  Here’s where I put my son to work.  I had him rake up a nice pile of leaves and dead grass.  Mostly dead grass – it’s so dry here.

3. Lay out your burlap, scoop up the clippings and place in the center. Use some string or twine to tie your burlap. Similar to tying a garbage bag. This is where a square piece would be easier to work with. The rectangle shape required more than one piece of string to catch shorter ends. Shape into a pumpkin shape.

4.  Print and cut out your stencil.  I used this one.  He went with our spider theme that we have going on this year.  I taped an extra sheet of paper on each side to keep the over spray from getting onto my pumpkin.  I put on a pair of disposable gloves and just held the stencil in place while I spray painted Mr. Happy Spider.  I also spray painted the stem of the pumpkin black, too.

5.  That’s it!  He’s done.  Total project took about 30 minutes.  Cutting out the stencil was the most time consuming part of the project.  Pretty cute, huh.
